I make PR simple

I didn’t want to be a PR. I wanted to work in marketing, so I studied that and advertising at Bournemouth University. As part of the course I had to get a six-week work placement and the only thing I could find was a PR intern at an agency in Sandbanks that was two bus rides from my house. I really didn’t want to take it but I did and that’s where my love of working in PR came from.

I enjoyed it so much that after university I enrolled in a Chartered Institute of Public Relations course to get my professional industry qualification. Back home in Cambridgeshire, PR jobs were few and far between so I worked in marketing until finally an opportunity came up at a PR agency. I quickly made my way up to PR Account Manager working on accounts like Go Ape and Montezuma’s Chocolate.

But it didn’t take me long to realise that I wanted to work for myself so I left and set up on my own. I worked with fashion, beauty, interiors and lifestyle brands from across the country securing them coverage on the editorial pages of magazines such as Vogue, Country Living, Cosmopolitan, Top Santé as well as the weekend supplements and daily newspapers.

I was also making candles, as a hobby but family and friends said I should sell them - so I started Kiss Air Candles in 2013 which snowballed and I closed my PR agency to focus on my product based business. From making the products, to sorting out the website, posting on social media and all the admin – the lot, it was all me. So I know all about the highs and lows of running a creative business.

I used my PR knowledge and was able to get my business featured in the likes of the Daily Mirror, Prima, Your Home, Top Sante and Veggie to name a few. I conjured up celebrity love from the likes of Denise Van Outen, Gok Wan and Catherine Tyldesley. I got the brand some pretty cool accolades too including being a winner of Theo Paphitis’ Small Business Sunday and the #smallbiz100 government backed scheme.

And that’s not even mentioning being stocked in independent shops up and down the country, our cocktail hour candle range that was shortlisted for Gift of the Year, being shortlisted for best wedding favours in British Wedding Awards and the fact our candles were included in the British Soap Awards presenter goodie bags (so basically Joan Collins has one)!

But my passion for candle making began to wane and I didn't know what to do. Then the pandemic hit and I set up a free Facebook group sharing my PR knowledge with other small products businesses. I loved getting to know other business owners and their stories, giving them the confidence to pitch to the press and celebrating with them when they got featured. And they did, in the like of Cosmopolitan, The Independent and Top Sante.

My love for PR was re-ignited and it lit me up teaching others to shine in the media spotlight. Then it hit me that I could teach small product based businesses how to do their own PR to reach new audiences and grow their business. So in September 2020, I launched Louise Cox PR.

Since then I've taught small businesses how to get their products featured in the press through my The Product PR Course and Christmas PR Project with great results, created a PR planner to help businesses plan and stay on track with their PR, been interviewed for Woman&Home and Business Game Changer Magazine and won Theo Paphitis Small Business Sunday competition and even presented a break out session on PR at the annual winners event.
